We have prepared a super special list to tell you a little about the cities that are a must-see on a trip in southern Italy.
It’s very complicated because we could make a list of at least 20 or so cities that are amazing in southern Italy, but we need to focus on the main ones.
Sicily
Let’s start with Sicily. This list takes into consideration the main cities of each region and what they have to offer. The two main cities in Sicily that we have selected are:
Siracura and Taormina
Siracura
The historic centre of Syracuse is fantastic, it is recommended to do at least one overnight stay there, the historic centre has a lot of information, it has a very important ecological park. It is close to several other small towns, very beautiful and important also for the region and you can choose to do a round trip to these places.
Taormina
The city of Taormina is the second choice in Sicily. Taormina is amazing and wonderful. One detail: it is very expensive, it is very vip. So if you do not want to spend too much, I advise you to stay in a nearby village, not so expensive, and then in the morning you go to Taormina to enjoy your day.
Calabria
What are two unmissable cities in Calabria?
We list here Scilla and Tropea
Scilla
Scilla is 15 minutes from Reggio Calabria, known as the Venice of southern Italy. This is because Scilla has a neighbourhood that is practically a fishermen’s quarter, and its houses are leaning on the sea, it is very romantic and for a couple’s trip is super recommended. It is very romantic and recommended for a couple’s trip.
Tropea
The main city of Calabria is obviously Tropea, the pearl of Calabria. If you are going to Calabria, it is worth visiting Tropea. It’s a fantastic city, it has a very beautiful and gracious historic centre, wonderful beaches, from Tropea you can take a boat trip along the Coast of the Gods, you can take boat trips to the Aeolian Islands, as well as having several small towns around it with fantastic beaches, it’s super worth a visit!
It is a very interesting point for those who are visiting with family and children.
Basilicata
Here we list an incredible city: Matera
Matera
What is the unmissable place in Basilicata? By far, Matera, the capital of culture 2019.
Matera is one of the most beautiful places in Italy, its architecture is what most catches your attention, they are period buildings, incredible, you feel in a medieval movie. It is a unique city, unlike anything you have ever seen, GUARANTEED.
Puglia
We chose 2 cities in Puglia.
Polignano a Mare and Alberobello
Polignano a Mare
Polignano a Mare is a seaside town that is well worth a visit during the summer period, equally Tropea. During the period April to October are great times to be visiting these locations. Polignano a Mare has the famous Ristorante Grota, above the hotel Grota Palazzese, being one of the 10 most famous restaurants in the world. The price of a stay at this hotel costs on average €950, really super vip. A dinner costs around €150 per person in this restaurant.
Alberobello
Another place that is very worthwhile, it is atypical, is Alberobello, it has a super gracious historical centre, you will see several Trulli or Trullo, which are the traditional little houses with the conical shaped roof.
Campagna
Campagna has too many places to put on the itinerary, so let’s go for the classics, there’s no way to visit Campagna and escape these places, they are:
Capri, Amalfi Coast and Ravello
Capri
Capri is a fantastic island, very beautiful, very touristy, and for this reason it ends up being very expensive indeed. If you really want to visit Capri, make your hotel reservation at least 4 to 6 months in advance, otherwise it will be very difficult because it is very popular.
If you don’t want to stay in Capri, you can make the round trip from Sorrento or Naples.
Amalfi Coast
There’s no way to leave out this region of Italy, it’s super classic. Who doesn’t like or want to visit the Amalfi Coast?
On the Amalfi Coast we have Positano, it is a very beautiful village to visit, however, it is very expensive to stay in, so it is better to choose to sleep in nearby towns or villages, about 20 minutes drive, and get up early towards Positano.
Ravello
This is our last recommendation, Ravello is not a town by the beach, it is a little bit off towards the mountains, and this guarantees a beautiful view, unlike Positano or Amalfi for example. What we recommend is to select 2 of these towns on the Amalfi Coast, separating the morning to visit one of these villages, having lunch there and following for the afternoon in another village, so your day is complete.
