I am going to Italy and I am in doubt between Cinqueterre and the Amalfi Coast, which one should I choose?

Cinqueterre or Amalfi Coast?

It depends what you are looking for. Personally I would say all of them, they both have different beauties, they are natural scenic beauties, they are beautiful little towns, really all the two options are very worthwhile. So if you can and have the means, the ideal would be to be putting in your itinerary all the two places.

Advice

It is good to be analysing according to the time of year you are going to be visiting, for example, Amalfi Coast between April and October would be the best period, avoiding the Amalfi Coast in winter.

Cinqueterre is open all year round, of course in the winter period it is a little less crowded, it is natural, low tourist season, but it has more tourism throughout the year, in the sense that during the winter, you will find more Cinqueterre working than the Amalfi Coast. Some things may close, others not.

If you choose Cinqueterre, we advise you to sleep in La Spezia, and from there you can take the train or boat to visit all the villages. So the towns on the Amalfi Coast are larger than the towns of Cinqueterre.

What is the ideal time to visit the Amalfi Coast?

For the Amalfi Coast it would be best to have at least two days to see the classics of the region, say Ravello, Positano and Amalfi.

In Cinqueterre it is possible to do one day, but the ideal would be at least two to three days. Remembering that it is very busy, but it is possible to go to the towns, visit and get to know a little, because the villages are small. So that’s it, from La Spezia you can visit the villages of Cinqueterre by train or boat. Give preference to the boat trip, because you would have an incredible view of the villages of Cinqueterre and the sea, it’s a must-see.

For the Amalfi Coast the ideal would be sleeping in Sorrento, and with public transport it will be more complicated, you can see yes with public transport, but I advise you, preferably, to visit with a car or with a local private driver, or with a boat you can go from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi. So, public transport on the Almalfi Coast is more complicated, unlike Cinqueterre.

Consider renting a car for the Amalfi Coast, if you can have your own car it becomes a much more enjoyable trip and you enjoy the experiences more.

Plan your visit preferably during the week, avoid rush hours and weekend, Saturday and Sunday avoid Costa Amalfitana because it is very crowded and a little uncomfortable to know the places.

Choosing between one and the other will depend on your itinerary, the transport you will use, the time of year, so many factors, but the truth is that both are unmissable. If you can, include both in your itinerary.
