Creating a travel itinerary in Portugal seems easy, but it’s not. The country is small, everything is close and so we have the illusion that we can cover the whole country in a week! Not quite like that hahahah.

In this article we will pass a very good alternative of itinerary that you can follow departing from Lisbon, with approximately 8 days of tour, is success! Stay with us until the and and know What to do in Portugal in one week.

Leaving from Lisbon

Lisbon-Praça-do-comercio

Start in Lisbon. When you leave the Airport, take the red line train and go wherever you want in Lisbon. Main points to visit:

25 de April Bridge

25-de-Abril-Bridge

Inspired was inspired by the Golden Bridge, California. Bridge that cuts the Tagus River, inaugurated in 1966. It separates Lisbon from Almada

A place where many people go to watch the sunset and see the Tagus River.

Tower of Belém

An important historical and touristic point of Portugal. It is worth a visit. Next to the tower is the famous Pastel de Belém.

Garden of the Empire Square

An iconic garden in Lisbon. With its water fountain in the centre, it’s a great place to visit quickly when in Lisbon.

Alcobaça

Alcobaça Portugal

It is where the Batalha Monastery and the Alcobaça Monastery are located, in the district of Leiria.

The Monastery of Alcobaça is where Dom Pedro I of Portugal and Inês de Castro, crowned queen of Portugal after her death, are buried.

Nazare

Nazare-Portugal

One of the best about what to do in Portugal in one week. Leave Lisbon and go to Nazaré, a town located in the middle of the coastal region. The city is small, so you can spend 1 day and 1 night there and it will be enough to visit the beach of Nazaré and the famous belvedere with the statue of the deer, where you can have an amazing view of the whole region, and see the largest waves in the world in winter, waves that reach up to 30 meters high.

São Martinho do Porto

Sao Martinho Portugal

Just below Nazaré is São Martinho do Porto. An unusual piece of information is that the beach of São Martinho has a shell shape, something that will leave you very surprised by the perfect shape that nature gave to the place. There you can eat at the waterfront restaurants dishes such as seafood, hamburger, bifanas (typical hamburger of the region), good pizzas and cafes.

Don’t forget to climb to the São Martinho belvedere to get a privileged view of the area and take beautiful photos. On the other side of the shell you will find a huge sand dune and at its

top a small pine forest. It’s worth going up there and checking it out, the view across the sea is amazing and satisfying!

Our recommendation is: Leave Nazaré early and spend the whole day in São Martinho. At the end of the day, head to Foz do Arelho and already leave your hotel/hostel reservation right!

Foz do Arelho

What to do in Portugal in one week

Just after São Martinho we have Foz do Arelho, an incredible and very beautiful place, with a portion of water that enters into the mainland, forming a landscape very different from anything you’ve ever seen! There you can walk along the sandy beach, eat at restaurants along the shore of Foz do Arelho and watch the sunset from the top of the belvedere.

It is a good option to sleep in this place, and rest a bit. Get ready to go to Peniche the next day.

Peniche/Berlengas Island

Berlenga islando Portugal

Upon waking up, dazzle the sunrise in Foz do Arelho and continue down south towards Peniche. On this first day you won’t exactly stay in Peniche. We highly recommend taking a boat to Berlengas Island.

Berlengas Island

Berlengas is an archipelago, a group of islands, being a natural reserve for breeding seagulls and its main island is called Berlenga (hence the name).

The round trip to the island from Peniche costs 20 euros. You have the option to go in a faster boat (20 minutes) or a slower boat (40mi2nutes).

In Peniche you can also buy a package of guided tour with local agencies, and also guided tours to the caves of the island. An average package of this is 35 euros/person.

It is a beautiful place and a unique experience! Precautions when arriving in Berlengas:

Do not leave the trails and do not feed the animals or birds. Basically, following this your walk will be a success!

Be prepared to walk, you will make a lot of effort walking and climbing the island. Also make sure to bring some food, water, hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes for long walks, but also remember to take as little as possible so as not to carry too much weight and harm your trip.

Given these minor details, all that remains is to enjoy the trip. On the boat tour of the caves you will see:

-St. Baptist Fort;

-Sleepy Hollow;

-Small Hole;

-Big Punch;

-St. John the Baptist Cave;

When you leave the boat tour you will take a short walk towards the high part of the island, passing by the top of Cova do Sono, you will also see the Berlenga Lighthouse, Bairro dos Pescadores, the Carreiro dos Cações.

And yes, it is possible to camp on site for a small fee, or also stay at a local hotel.

After your day in Berlengas, you return to Peniche by boat and there you will continue your journey.

In Peniche you can visit the region of Papôa and make a nice hike in the place with a view of the sea and in the background it is possible to see the Berlengas Island. This walk will be quite exciting and fun, you will pass through uneven terrain, wooden bridges. Make sure you bring a snack, water, sunscreen and a hat.

The seafood, fish and restaurant market is very good in the city, in the local restaurants you can easily order seafood, fish and seafood for a price that fits in your pocket.

Here you can visit:

-Cabo do Carvoeiro;

-Peniche Fortress;

-Baleal Beach;

After that tour,

Back to Lisbon

After this long tour, it will be approximately 7-8 days and you will have known a little more of Portugal. To get to know this country you need a good amount of time, but with 7-8 days it is already possible to feel a bit of the Portuguese climate and go home with a taste for more!
