Living in Italy requires a lot of planning, especially financial planning.

In this article we will talk about the cost of living in Italy after the pandemic. Did things increase in price a lot?

Post pandemic things have changed a little bit and some things specifically have increased in price quite a bit.

We will base ourselves for the expenses in the Verona region, which can be taken as a basis for Italy as a whole, as long as you consider regional corrections for flat rentals, higher costs in tourist cities, food among other expenses.

We will try to pass on the most realistic figure possible of what it costs to live in Italy in 2022.

What is the biggest expense of living in Italy?

The highest amount of fixed expenses for living in Italy is still rent.

To live in Italy, in most parts of the country, rental contracts are usually a little longer, usually from 2 to 4 years, renewable for another four. This means that during these four years of contract you will continue paying the same amount as in all the previous years.

Price for renting a flat

Average of 650 Euros.

What you can see is that in the last year there has been an increase in demand for places to rent and the supply has decreased. As there is a shortage of flats, the price increases. If you look for tourist cities, the cost of flats increases even more.

Le Bollete” house price

These bills can be monthly, bimonthly, quarterly or even yearly, but don’t be fooled because this factor of being bimonthly or quarterly can lead you to bankruptcy, in the sense that if you don’t prepare and save in the months when you don’t receive the bills, when you receive the bill you won’t have money to pay it. So that requires a little more planning and a slightly ‘fatter’ financial reserve.

Water bills

In this same flat, for two people (a couple), on average, between 15 and 20 euros are consumed monthly. This is not very expensive in relation to the total price.

Energy bills

Unfortunately this is a bill that has increased a lot in recent months in Italy, but to try to minimize this impact for families, the government is giving every month a bonus, a discount on the value of electricity so that the population does not suffer much with this.

The expenditure that a couple has, in this same flat, would be on average 35 euros to 40 euros a month.

Gas Bills

Gas in Italy is something that can scare people, especially in the winter months, when it is used more, and if you are not careful the gas bills go through the roof.

In this same example, a couple uses on average €40 to €50 per month on gas bills.

Boiler maintenance

A bill that many do not expect, if they are not used to it, is the maintenance of the Boiler that makes the heating of the house. This is a bill that is the responsibility of the tenant, so you need to make this control with a specialized company, usually the value is between 80 euros and 120 euros annually, giving on average 7 euros to 10 euros monthly.

Selective Collection

Another annual fee that must be paid is the fee for selective rubbish collection, called ‘Tassa Rifiuti’. This varies according to the city, according to the province, according to the size of the place where you live, how many people live in the property.

This amount will vary greatly from city to city. Once again, for the region of Verona and surroundings, the selective waste collection fee averages 180 euros per month. That’s 15 euros a month.

Internet and telephone bills

It generally includes fibre optic wi-fi, an extra SIM card with internet, sms and calls for an average of 39 euros a month.

Food

An expense that has not changed so much in recent years, it has remained practically the same as the last years before the pandemic. You will spend on average, for house purchases, a couple, amounts between 150 euros and 200 euros monthly.

Detail, this value is for food at home, not considering food in restaurants, eating out, fast food, etc.

Expenditure with car

Car an expense that not everyone will have when they arrive in Italy, but when you already have a more stable life, I believe it is the goal of many people.

For a popular, financed, zero-kilometre car, the cost is on average 200 euros a month.

Car insurance

As soon as you buy the car you already have to consider the cost of insurance. It is a liability insurance.

The first insurance payment is usually always more expensive, however the following ones are cheaper. Generally ok?

For insurance from the second year onwards, the cost of insurance averages 357 Euros per year.

Circulation document

With the car, you also pay the documentation to be able to circulate, it varies according to the region and the power of the car. The value of this fee averages 147 euros per year for a popular car. That is 13 euros per month.

Expenditure on car fuel

Another thing that has increased too much in this last year is fuel.

Before it paid on average between €1.29 and €1.35.

Nowadays the price is around €2.07, which represents a significant expense to get around with your car.

Depending on your usage, you will have an average monthly spend of between €140 and €180 per month on fuel.

Car servicing and maintenance

If you have a car you will also have to bear the expenses of servicing and maintenance. The revision needs to be done annually and this includes changing the oil air filters and also changing the oil. On average, for a popular car, you will spend between 120 and 160 euros per year on servicing your car for these items. Divided by 12 months it is 11 euros per month.

General overview

Logically, we do not add some very specific expenses, such as leisure, pharmacy and hospital expenses, day-to-day things, personal expenses that vary according to each person’s needs.

Adding up all the expenses mentioned, you would have a fixed monthly expense, for a couple, of between €1150 and €1500 per month.

In this figure we have considered a small addition to correct for the difference between regions, but the average is this.
